An eccentric collection of stuff I happen to be working on. If your hobby is collecting new hobbies, you'll probably enjoy coming along for the ride.
Single Wire 49 to 1 UNUN
Here we go again. Yep - you can also wind the popular 49 (or 64) to 1 UNUNs with a single wire. You actually get a better performing transformer than the traditional two wire method.
Didn't bore you with every detail, so if you missed the 9:1 UNUN video it's here: ruclips.net/video/K3d-IvIFxj8/видео.html

Single Wire UNUNs - a quick 9 to 1
Просмотров 762Год назад
Came up a couple of times recently that I don't wind UNUNs - especially the 9:1 - the same way as most folks are taught. Here's my method.
Charging Li Batteries in the Car
Просмотров 1,2 тыс.2 года назад
I wanted a solution for charging Li-chemistry batteries (LiFePO4 mostly) in the car. Commercial chargers are pricy! This solution uses inexpensive boards from Amazon to deal with the random voltages in a car and the charging characteristics of a lithium battery. If you want to 3D print a case, here's a nifty viewer submitted design (Thanks Charlieray!!!). www.thingiverse.com/thing:5092874 Chapt...
The Worlds Fastest DX Commander
Просмотров 20 тыс.3 года назад
Update: I forgot that I have an older version of this antenna. The wing nut issue I talked about has been fixed, so if you order one today you won't run into the same thing. Most common question I get about my DX Commanders is "how long does it take to put that up." Particularly with the expedition model, folks are operating portable and setup time is lost QSO time. Today I'm walking you throug...
LiFePo4 Battery Build using LiitoKala 32700 cells
Просмотров 4,9 тыс.3 года назад
Based on a series of tests done over at the electronicsNmore channel (ruclips.net/video/uyAtkGaO0hA/видео.html) I decided to build myself another battery for ham radio use. These cells are marked 7000mAh, but their spec sheet says 6500 and that seems to be more realistic. The spec sheet also says 30A continuous discharge, so that's what I built the pack for BUT check the tests over at electroni...
POTA in the Snow

I promised to show you all the linked dipole I built in action. Well here it is. Setup shop at Moraine State Park in Western PA. It's POTA designator K-1387. I tried to keep the extraneous talking to a minimum, but there are two "teachable" moments in here (that's what you call it when you screw up and try to find the silver lining...). The build video for the dipole is here: ruclips.net/video/...
Cheap-O Power Meter Accuracy Improvements
Просмотров 1,4 тыс.3 года назад
I bought one of the inexpensive DC power meters readily available on the Interwebs to keep track of how much juice is left in my batteries. Turns out that, surprise surprise, the current measurement is off enough that the calculated power utilization isn't going to work for me. This is the explanation of how the meter measures current, and what can be done to alter the measurements. Since we ha...
Portable Linked Dipole with 3D printed parts
Просмотров 2,6 тыс.4 года назад
Found some inspiration for a new linked dipole on Thingiverse. Should be a nice add to the POTA kit. This is the construction video. Part #2 we'll take it out in the field and look at how it compares to my other portable options. Best LiFePO4 Value Ever? - Yes IF you get a good one.
Просмотров 15 тыс.4 года назад
UPDATE: This battery is no longer available unfortunately. I've left the video up in case anyone is interested in battery testing and how to deal with Watt-Hours as a unit. I bought a Kanavano 25AHr LiFePO4 battery from AliExpress for $100. That's a ridiculously low price for this chemistry and capacity, so I figured there had to be a catch somewhere. In the video I: - Run through the competing...
N3FJP ACLog for POTA Activators
Просмотров 24 тыс.4 года назад
How to handle logging for POTA, particularly for activations, is easily a top 5 question in the group. This is how I do it, using Amateur Contact Log from N3FJP. The video assumes you have the software installed in it's default / brand new configuration and walks through the setup of the necessary database fields. The UI is the customized to streamline QSO entry while out at the park, although ...
Mega Tree with ASAP pole

Demo at 16:55 - ruclips.net/video/BVG3nldkde8/видео.html Time for the biggest add to the light show this year! I finally got the time to build a mega tree using the ASAP pole design. This is a construction video (with a short demo at the end). If you're interested in the wiring/electronics behind this bugger, leave me a comment to let me know. Outdoor Power Distribution for LED lights
Просмотров 18 тыс.4 года назад
Getting into the 2019 Christmas light show season, and it all starts with the power. No power - no lights. I'm taking the time to build up the power distribution boxes right this year, so neatness now counts. I bought my enclosures and the PSUs themselves from WiredWatts.com. No affiliation with them they just happen to be relatively close, ship fast (and at actual costs), and the owner is alwa...

Just under the wire! Here's my submission for this years Woodworkers Fighting Cancer drive. Big BIG thanks to Marc and Nicole over at the Wood Whisperer for sponsoring this event again. If you're not already following Marc's work - you clearly live under a rock and won't be reading this anyway. I went way, way off the plans for this (hope it still counts!) but I had a specific use in mind for i...

Dewalt DW734 Unboxing and Initial Thoughts
Love that mobile J pole. I have been a ham since 1965 and never made one. My ringo ranger got broken in a storm and I think I will build one. They all seem to have wonderful SWR over the band. de WB7ORB
When I did this I found that the half inch lip was a narrow on my test cut. So I made a free-hand pass with the router to make the lip bigger and the opening smaller. Edit: I did not bother bolting mine to the table so I can pull it out and change the speed, the lift sits inside of a box with a dust collection port.
so I just did the exact same thing with mine. What I was wondering is I installed a 1/2" bit and cannot loosen it to get it out, I didn't want to damage the neralling so I was hoping for an easy answer, I guess I am going to have to grab the neralling with a big pair of channel locks and go for it.
Very useful. Kinda fun too. Thank you!
some great tips there! Thank you
Can't get the cap
Would it be better to use a metal on metal like the diamond bit or a metal file type bit such as used in the automotive grinding tools every time I use the orange or the gray grinding wheels the material eats up the wheel so those types of stones really aren't that effective at removing lots of metal
Good vid. Where can I get those small T-Track clamps you showed? I have searched but cannot find them.
I hope i can see what you are doing
Great video, would it help to bleed air out if the unit was heated to making fluid less viscus? thanks
Thanks very much for your video. Could you please tell me what diameter and cutting length your pattern bit was to cut the final pocket from the template. It looks like 3/4" diameter and 3/4" cutting length in the video but wasn't sure. Thanks.
that's pretty awesome, I'm new ham radio and just got my call sign about a month ago, I'm also from Pa I live in a small town near Somerset. im going to build one and who knows I might be talking to ya soon
Thank you.
Looks well made would love to make it but being a disabled first responder with no drill press I guess this one's out for me. But nice work Matt I bet it works awesome 👍😎
I did one that is 4x4 feet with 4 turns. It worked quite well. My method involved no drilling. or glue I suggest others copy the idea. Imagine you are holding some PVC pipe in your left hand wit a T on top of it. You pass the wire on the side close to you below the T loop it around the T and to behind the pipe in your hand. The result is a wire that doesn't want to slip off the T. This is how I did the 4 corners of the frame. It works fine.
I trust SW more than the internet pal. Good production thank you.
The math is a big tricky to get exact but close is good enough with a variable capacitor to tune with the inductance.
Can we get a close up photo of the driven element?
What you suggest for chainsaw teeth crome teeth tried pink useless
The longer you live the more you realize how useful PVC pipes are
Where is the promised update video? What’s your desk look like now 4 years later?
Let’s go Steelers
The units of measurement in the metric system are millimetres meters and kilometres you should abandon centimetres as ancient history.
I have had this sander for over 10 years used occassionally i even forgot and left it outside in a light rain once it is a bit underpowered and as stated the v belt tension is super critical. You need some basic mechanical and trouble shooting skills to set up these imported luckily there are Utube how to videos on how to set up and used most any H/F corded power tools. Lately Harbor Freight has risin a lot of its prices and a lot of WEN tool which are a notch higher in qualiy and service. For our budget minded Candian friends buying WEN corded tools off Amazon might be a viable option.
I will admit, as a bigger guy myself, I held my breath when you sat in that tiny chair hihi! Good job on the video Matt, you're helping get Callum a new customer here. I'm really close to pulling the trigger on a Rapide.
Subscribed, thank you... How do you log a P2P hunter who is at more than one park?
Radios always fascinated me. I love the way radio works.

Crystal radios are near enough to magic.
A common saying used to describe the proper power pole orientation is “red right, tongue top” where “tongue” refers to the metal contact inside the plastic shell. Thus, looking at the open end of the connector, just as you do, the red goes on the right and oriented such that the tongue is at the top of the opening. I suppose there are any number of ways to describe the orientation.
You helped me so much thank you
Not for IOS?? Wish you had mentioned that in the beginning. Thanks
If I may make a suggestion. At the beginning of this video you could mention that this video is part 2 of a 2 part video. Part 1 was installing a new side extension to accept the future router lift.
@ Mattheere. Absolutely. Ty
Very disappointed you did not start the video with the install of the wing extension onto your table saw.
That's a previous video if you wanted to see it
7 year old video, but still one of the best and most informative JessEm install overviews.
Fabrication steps very clever and well explained.
I'm sorry but this is a piece of China shit.
A video worth sharing.
can you share the specs of the humidifier? and are you connected with 220v?
Bought a commercial little medium wave loop some time ago. They attach two wires to the cap and bring the end via a phono plug into the receiver. Works from roundabout 500kHz up to about 3.8Mhz. Neat construction your loop Matt, thanks for the video!!!
doing this mod would i be able to use it for auto body on thin sheet metal or would it be too hot
nice video! looks like something you should do before heading out to the park
Thank you sir
Please help just got mine put together turned it on an the chuck wobbles bad what can I do
i think i ll disconect the fan and place a bigger one and quiet on the top ,in the the place were the vents are sucking the air out..
Watched this whole video thinking i was going to learn how v to build a CB antennna LMFAO
Matt huge thank for this - I had this exact question requiring an answer and you've done just that to perfection!
Great job for AM Dx logging & listening.....With a band Full of Active night Time stations you Just Can't beat the Std MW Broadcast Band for Real long distance reception with Simple cheap Equipment ! ......FM maxes Out at 'bout 150 miles & Google Streaming Isn't real RF radio......How about Comparing This diy Frame Loop design to a Long Diy Ferrite Rod show down Video ??
2 meters in Alabama is dead. I can dial up a repeater at 8AM and hear nothing until 5PM when the drive time happens (and maybe hear two or three QSO happen) . Then it is dead until morning drive time comes around and the same two or three QSO happen again, same people, same subjects. Boring !! I get more activity on 2 meter SSB than on FM repeaters. Why bother with 2 meter FM anymore ???
.... as a visitor you can travel through any major community and give a call on the local repeater... no one will come back to you, not-a peep.. then as you say, come 4:30pm and 'the drive' and all you'll hear is the local club good -buddy grinders fire up for their drive home home daily chat... I occasionally travel through the States from Canada... don't even bother to putting a rig in my car anymore.
The powder post beetles don't get nourishment from the wood but they get it from the fungus in the wood. Control the fungus by low moisture content.
Never ever use pressure treated for bird house! Take this video off!!
The gear assembly for the table raising and lowering, wants to pull in on the shaft when raising and pull the handle off the shaft (the set screw is some small mm philips screw for the handle and still wants pull the handle off even when tightened), when lowering the shaft wants to push out. Both ways want to bind the gears and is very hard to turn to operate the table position. Not happy with this problem and calling HF about this. 15 Jan 24. The table handle assembly is now set at a 45 degrees to the table so there is no table interference.
